Trivia Question❓

Manvel, Texas, sits in Brazoria County, which takes its name from a river whose title derives from a Spanish corruption of what Native American tribe's name?

Manvel City Council tackled a wide-ranging agenda Sept. 21, addressing the city budget, utility rates, and several major development updates.

Council unanimously advanced a property tax rate of $0.56 per $100 valuation β€” unchanged nominally from last year, but above the no-new-revenue rate of $0.533990, meaning the city will collect more as property values rise.

Final approvals were granted for updated water, sewer, and impact fees, a freestanding emergency center on Highway 6, and an updated city fee schedule that eliminates burglar and fire alarm permit fees beginning Oct. 1.

On the development front, the Presidio PUD dropped its residential component and faces water capacity concerns, while a 166-acre subdivision near Rodeo Palms was deferred without a vote.

Manvel Town Center keeps growing β€” First Watch, Potbelly, Five Guys, and Memorial Hermann are among the newest and upcoming additions along the SH 288 corridor.

Manvel dominated Alvin 53-0 on Senior Night at Freedom Field, but the scoreboard was far from the headline.

Mason Wisnoski, a Manvel senior with Down syndrome, joined the Mavericks' captains for the opening coin toss β€” then made history on the very first play.

Mason took a handoff and raced 30 yards for his first career touchdown.

His teammates immediately swarmed him in celebration before lifting him onto their shoulders in a moment that quickly captured hearts across the region.

On the field, Brayden Tuiasosopo rushed for 79 yards and two touchdowns, while Manvel's defense held Alvin to just 71 total yards.

The Mavericks are now 4-0 overall and 2-0 in district play, having outscored opponents 195-7 this season.

Up next, Manvel travels to face undefeated Pearland (5-0) on Friday, October 2 at 7 p.m. β€” but Thursday night belonged entirely to Mason.
