Looking for a way to give back in Pearland?

The Exchange Club of Pearland offers several starting points, from supporting child abuse prevention to helping maintain a familiar patriotic display along Broadway.

The club’s work centers on youth programs, Americanism, community service and child abuse prevention — a mix that connects everyday opportunities to help with broader community needs.

More Than Flags Along Broadway

If you have noticed the American flags displayed along FM 518, also known as Broadway, you have seen one of the club’s projects.

The club owns the 3-by-5-foot flags, while the City of Pearland places them.

The displays mark occasions including Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, Veterans Day and Presidents Day.

Keeping that tradition going takes upkeep: flags exposed to the weather eventually need replacing.

The club also says it has received requests for flags at neighborhood entrances to welcome military members returning home.

For residents who appreciate those displays, supporting the program is one way to help care for something they already see around town.

Bringing Attention to Child Abuse Prevention

Child abuse prevention is another central part of the club’s service work and is emphasized as the National Exchange Club’s national program.

The Pearland club’s prevention page highlights an April awareness effort encouraging people to wear blue or a “break the silence” shirt on Mondays.

It also directs visitors to awareness packages and shirts through the Brazoria County Alliance for Children and provides a way to contribute to the club’s prevention projects.

April is the focus of that particular campaign; readers interested in helping now can contact the club about its current projects.

Gathering the Community

The club’s annual One Nation Under God luncheon brings community leaders, advocates and supporters together for a meal, a speaker and prayer.

Its event page also offers an option to sponsor seats for attendees or veterans who may be unable to pay.

The Car & Craft Show provides another opportunity to gather, with craft booths, a festival and a car show among the activities described on the club’s website.

The page also calls for new baby items for local pantries.

Readers interested in participating should check with the club for confirmed event dates, registration details and current collection needs before making plans.

A Seat at the Table

Getting acquainted with a service organization can start with a conversation.

The club has dinner meetings on the second and fourth Wednesdays at 6 p.m. at Casa Ole, 3100 Broadway in Pearland, and invites visitors to see whether the group is a good fit. However, the meetings go on hiatus in November and December.

Residents can use the club’s contact page to ask about visiting a meeting, supporting a project or learning more about membership.
