Trivia Question❓

Manvel, Texas sits within Brazoria County, which lies along a stretch of the Gulf Coast known for its unique soil type — what is the name of the dark, expansive clay soil dominant in this region that shrinks and cracks dramatically during dry periods?

Answer at the bottom of the newsletter

Manvel City Council’s Oct. 19 meeting brought approval for a public safety partnership, funding support for emergency preparedness and more questions on two pending proposals.

Council unanimously approved a crash-reconstruction agreement with Pearland, allowing the police departments to combine specialized investigators and equipment for serious collisions.

Presidio’s final zoning reading received no action. Mayor Dan Davis said utility agreements, impact fees, phasing and consistency between documents still needed work. Council also took no action on a county law-enforcement mutual-aid agreement while members sought more detail about staffing and costs.

Phillips 66 and Freeport LNG were recognized for a combined $25,000 donation toward converting an existing city trailer into a mobile command unit. The project is intended to support field coordination during emergencies and public safety operations.

The approved consent agenda included a 30-day burn-ban disaster declaration extension, final infrastructure acceptance for specified road segments and Pomona Section 26, and consent for MUD No. 83 bond issuance.

Council also approved a refrigerated prepared-meal program for police employees, filled a Planning, Development and Zoning Commission seat through March 2027 and supported Sally Branson for TML Region 14 director.

Presidio and the county mutual-aid agreement remain items to watch on future agendas; neither was approved at this meeting.

More than 81,000 early ballots have been reported in Brazoria County ahead of the Nov. 3 election.

TexPolls’ statewide table lists 81,190 ballots through Oct. 26, including 78,439 cast in person and 2,751 mail ballots received. Its reported turnout rate is 31.1% of registered voters.

The tracker lists 21.6% at the same point in the 2022 midterm early-voting period, a difference of 9.5 percentage points. Voting hours and registered-voter totals differ between elections.

TexPolls’ separate county page lists ten fewer ballots for the same period. Both pages report 31.1%; the discrepancy could not be independently reconciled.

These are provisional participation figures, not candidate results or an election forecast. Mail ballots received are not necessarily accepted or counted.

Early voting ends Friday, Oct. 30. Consult the county’s current polling schedule and use a location in your county of registration. Election Day is Nov. 3.
